Summary:
Contemporary African American poetry is being vibrantly expressed both in the written word, but also in performance, drawing on the legacy of the African American oral tradition. These performances include poetry slams, live readings, and on-stage performances, the latter proving to be an especially effective medium for dealing with the topic of AIDS and its toll on the gay black poet community.
