Summary:
Rather than call the new generation of poets and poetry a 'new movement,' 'new thing' is perhaps more appropriate to describe the amalgam of written poetry, poetry slams, hip hop and open mic sessions created and celebrated by contemporary African American poets. While media coverage of this 'new thing' has tended to be unfairly biased with a focus on the east coast, there are new anthologies being published, erring on the side of inclusiveness (including a wide geographic range), as well as writers stretching the limits of language as part of the poetic tradition.
